Score- Aix en Provence 0: Beach 1

Yesturday we headed to a neighboring town, Aix en Provence. We had heard some great things about the town, but aside from their numerous fountains, there really wasn't much to do. We spent most of the day wandering around, mostly because we didn't have a map for awhile, walking into several churches and a few boutiques. Other than saying that we have been to Paul Cezanne's hometown and have seen his mountain, the day was kind of a bust!

We started today with just a few things on our agenda thinking it would be a relaxing day. Unfortunately, the things we wanted to do were about as far apart as they could possibly be, so we are pretty beat today.

Just down the street from where we are staying is a clothing and food market that takes place every moring. Having driven past it a few times we decided to drop in. The market was very crowded but full of fun things, dresses, men's shirts, sun glasses, hair accessories, spools of ribbon, craft items, fresh seafood, fresh produce, and on and on! We even encountered a crazy old lady who would shuffle a few steps, then start yelling at everyone to move out of her way, shuffle a few steps, then start yelling again!
Here is the Arc de Triumph of Marseille.
A mini Mini that Erika immediately fell in love with. The survival rate of this car if it gets into an accident is probably 0. But notice how it is parked, halfway onto the sidewalk over the curb. This is how everyone parks in France, we have come to realize there are few rules that the French follow!
Our first stop today was the Longchamp Palace which, as you can see, was totally worth the walk! It was beautful, a little spot of tranquility among the busy city. This building also houses the Museum of Beaux Arts (unfortunatly closed) and the Natural History Museum.
We spent a lot of time wandering around the grounds and enjoying the fountains.
At the top of the palace, there is a beautiful view of the city and the Notre Dame de la Garde (the cathedral on top of the big hill).
After the palace, we headed to the beach!!! Finally a beach day! It was quite a trek along a road that reminded us of L.A. The major boulevard was lined with large trees and huge old houses very rich and very posh.

The beach was not sandy but a rocky one set in a little cove with such blue water. We didn't go swimming though because the wind was so strong that it was chilly even out of the water.
Tonights dinner was so good! We bought a package of a fozen noodle dish and added some flavor! We also made our own garlic bread....mmmmmmmm! It was a nice change from sandwiches!

Tomorrow we are heading for Cannes! Hopefully we will be able to post something but we are never sure what type of internet access we will have! Thank you to everyone for your comments! We really enjoy reading them, they are always the first thing we check everyday!
XOXOXOXOXO

  1. Sorry you had a boring day yesterday! Are you renting scooters or bikes everyday? Your dinner looks really good and flea markets are always fun. I love the palace too and am glad you got to the beach. I know Cannes has water because actors sometimes use boats to arrive at the film festival! Have a wonder time and keep us updated. We are living vicariously through you!
    Kisses,

  3. Is it just my imagination or is there an Arc de Triumph and Notre Dame Cathedral in every city you visit?? Enjoy your visit to Cannes. Hopefully it will be a little more interesting than Aix en Provence. Audrey suggested that when you get to Nice, you might want to consider a day trip to Monaco. It is supposed to be quite pretty and I don't think it's too far (about 13 km??). It's on the water and the palace is beautiful. It shouldn't take long to go through all of Monaco - it's quite small but probably worth seeing. Love, Mom

  6. Now Travis taught me how to leave a comment with my name on top. By the way, since I love following the weather (75 F and really humid, today) how has it been there?
