A rainy day in Lyon

This is us about to dive into the delicious meal we cooked last night! It was shredded chicken, tomato and cheese quesadillas accompanied with an awesome salad composed of fresh greens, sliced apples, tomatoes, mozzarella and topped with a raspberry balsamic viniagrette. The girl on the far right is our main host Maider and she has been awesome to us! Her boyfriend may make an appearence later on but because he is a bartender he typically works from 5 pm to 4 am.
We went to the Museè des Beaux Arts today because it was rainy and somewhat chilly. It is housed in an old palace in a beautiful square with fountains and little cafes. The sculpture room was in the chapel area of the old palace and had several beautiful pieces. This is a sculpture of Perseus and Medusa so naturally AJ was absorbed with it. Perseus is about to chop off her head, so yeah, she's not very happy.
Throughout Lyon there are these tiny little plaques of a lions head on certain walls, the traboules from yesterday's post, and they lead you on a path through alleyways and flights of stairs. This is one of the areas that we found and it houses several really cool boutiques full of unique artists focusing on specific techniques.
Two crazy people that we took a picture of in front of a fountain. The fountain is really sweet because every few minutes steam rushes out of the horses nostrils making them seem like they are charging into battle.
The Eglise St-Nizier from the outside, a typical gothic looking cathedral. Has anyone gotten sick of cathedrals yet? :)
Fortunately, the altar at the Eglise St-Nizier was unique. Each figurine was about 2 feet high and encompassed the base. It was quite a simple church but had interesting qualities such as vibrant purple stained glass windows and a very wide nave which, is the main aisle.
A cool view of the monument to Louis XIV with the Notre Dame de Fourviére. This is a really strange view because the church is actually high on a hill, (really high on a hill!) but here it looks almost level with the ground we are standing on. In this square we found a book store full of english books which was great because AJ needed a new book to read.
Shortly after the storm hit the clouds cleared and gave us a very nice view of the Place Bellecour which, is a massive open square and contains a monument to Louis XIV. Although we haven't shown any pictures of Louis XIV there is an exorbitant amount of statues, monuments and paintings dedicated to this overindulgent leader. He almost put France in debt building the Palace of Versailles.
Tomorrow we are planning on going on a day trip to the small town of Perouges.

Hope the weather was better at home than it was here!

  2. Just an FYI but the weather has sucked here. You guys picked a great time to backpack because I cannot remember a more lukewarm summer. Today was only in like the low 70s with some rain. The pictures are turning out really great though so keep it up, even if there are a lot of churches!

    Love ya guys,
    Christian

  3. Eglise St-Nizier!! How unique. A church that isn't a Notre Dame. Who would have ever thought.

  4. At least it wasn't another Notre Dame!
Quite an interesting altar. The sky sure looked nasty - pretty much what ours looked like today. Your days have always looked pretty good so if this was the first bad day, you've been quite lucky. We've had quite a bit of rain and cooler weather. Enjoyed seeing your host. It's nice to put a face with a name. Love you, Mom
